Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he has never heard players speak in such glowing terms about a manager as Brighton duo Danny Welbeck and Adama Lallana did about Roberto De Zerbi, who is rumoured to be a target for Tottenham.
De Zerbi has won rave reviews since replacing Graham Potter at the Amex Stadium back in September and the Italian is unsurprisingly now being linked with some top jobs in the Premier League and around Europe.
Football Insider were the first to report on February 15 that the former Sassuolo boss is being monitored by Spurs amidst the uncertainty over Antonio Conte’s future.
The publication claimed that 43-year-old’s work with the Seagulls had made an ‘excellent impression’ on the Lilywhites hierarchy.
The Telegraph subsequently revealed on February 21 that De Zerbi has a release clause of £11.5m in his contract with the South Coast club.
The report explained that the Italian is not just of interest to Tottenham but will also be considered by the likes of AS Roma, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus, who could all be on the lookout for new managers in the summer.
Ferdinand has now revealed that both Welbeck and Lallana were raving about De Zerbi’s tactical acumen and his man-management skills.
The former Manchester United man said about the Brighton boss on his YouTube channel (as relayed by TBR Football): “I saw Welbs the other day, and Adam Lallana.
“And the way they spoke about this guy, I’ve never seen them speak about a manager like that.
“The last time I saw a player speak about a manager like this was when Mourinho was here at Chelsea.
“But, De Zerbi, they’re saying he is the one. The detail he puts in, the players going on the pitch know exactly what they’ve got to do, can change stuff up, making players feel a million dollars.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There are quite a lot of parallels between the work that De Zerbi is doing at Brighton and what Pochettino has achieved at Southampton, with the players seemingly loving working with the Italian just as the Saints players did with the Argentine in the past.
So, perhaps it will make sense for Tottenham to go for the ‘new Pochettino’ in De Zerbi rather than rehiring the 51-year-old as we know how it usually goes when managers or players return to their former stomping ground.
