A new report from the Evening Standard has shed some light on Fabio Paratici’s potential ban from football, and it is thought Tottenham Hotspur will know within the next month how this situation will impact them.
Paratici became the managing director of football at Tottenham in 2021, joining from Juventus. The Italian has been integral to Spurs’ transfer policy since, helping to facilitate the signings of Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, and Rodrigo Bentancur.
In January of this year, it was reported that Juventus’ capital gains trial would lead to the Serie A giants being hit with a 15-point deduction, while Paratici was set for a 30-month suspension due to his involvement in the club at the time in question (Gianluca Di Marzio).
Paratici was among a number of former and current Juventus executives to receive lengthy bans, after a hearing at the federal court of appeal.
The suspension applies to Italian football under the Italian football federation (FIGC), but there is a chance this could be expanded to include the UK, too (Tancredi Palmeri). Of course, that would leave his position with Spurs untenable.
Under Fifa’s regulations, however, a national association can apply to extend a ban outside its own country.
Under Article 66 of Fifa’s disciplinary code, the rules state that a ban can be extended if the offence is “serious”, including “in particular but not limited to discrimination, the manipulation of football matches and competitions, misconduct against match officials or forgery and falsification”.
Paratici has appealed the ban for his alleged role in financial irregularities and accounting scandals and is awaiting a decision from the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). Juventus, and other officials such as Pavel Nedved, have also appealed.
According to the piece in the Evening Standard, Paratici is likely to hear the result of his appeal within the next one to four weeks as CONI discuss the matter.
The committee cannot reduce the punishment, but they can decide whether the original ruling was legitimate or not.
It is said that if CONI does deem the original decision to be correct, “the FIGC immediately will ask UEFA and FIFA to extend the bans globally.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s a worrying situation this one, as Paratici has been so important to Spurs acquiring some great talent during his time with the club. It would not be ideal to lose him, and would also throw into question the dealings he has carried out here, too.
