Harry Kane has claimed that he and his teammates are trying their hardest both in training and during matches but remarked that the team lacks the ‘ruthless hunger’ required to reach the next level.
In many ways, Tottenham’s elimination from the Champions League on Wednesday feels like the final nail in the coffin for Antonio Conte’s project at the club.
The dull and uninspiring performance from the Lilywhites in the second leg was indicative of a team who are lacking confidence and have run out of ideas.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw in the second leg, Kane told The Evening Standard: “Over the two legs, we can’t really say we did enough to get through.
“That’s just the reality of it. We need to improve in a lot of aspects and that’s the bottom line.”
Conte is now clearly feeling the pressure, with the Italian even admitting following Tottenham’s elimination from the Champions League that the club might decide to sack him before his contract runs out in the summer (Amazon Prime via Fabrizio Romano).
The Athletic had reported on Tuesday that the Spurs players do not expect the 53-year-old to be in charge next season and that many would not miss him, having grown tired of his intensity and the way he sets the team up.
When asked if the uncertainty surrounding Conte’s position was a distraction, Kane responded: “That’s his decision, he’s going to be the one that makes that choice [on his future].
“All we can do as players is try to perform for him, work as hard as we can. That’s what we’re doing.
“I said after the Wolves game at the weekend, you can’t fault the effort of the players.
“We’re trying, we’re training but we’re just lacking something.
“We’ve talked about mentality before and that ruthless hunger to be better, to be the best, to be one of the best teams in Europe. We just haven’t quite found that yet.”

The players will all be aware that Conte’s days at the club are numbered.
So, it is only natural that their performance levels have dropped and I can see it getting far worse if the club stick with the Italian.
That is why I expect the Tottenham hierarchy to act quickly instead of waiting until the end of the season.
