Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he thinks Antonio Conte should leave Tottenham Hotspur immediately if he has no intention of staying beyond the end of the season.
Conte has been with Tottenham since November 2021 and led the side to a top four finish in the Premier League last season. However, this campaign has been far less positive, with results and performances on the field proving frustrating for fans.
Spurs have seen their hopes of silverware end for yet another season after crashing out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a aweek.
The Italian’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and it is currently unknown whether Conte will commit to a new deal or not. In fact, the manager has even admitted he could be sacked before the summer (Prime Video via Fabrizio Romano).
It is thought Conte will remain in charge until the season ends, largely due to the fact Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to disrupt the Lilywhite’s hunt for a top four spot again this year (Daily Mail).
For Sutton, the idea of Conte sticking around until the end of his contract doesn’t make any sense, and the pundit suggests the 53-year-old should move on now if he is unwilling to sign a new deal with Spurs.
“It’s better for all concerned if he goes now. I think he will see the season out, but I’m just really confused what is going on at Spurs at this moment.
“Antonio Conte really needs to commit one way or the other and if he says ‘I’m here and happy to sign for another year or two’ then Tottenham can move on but it doesn’t look like he will.”
“Therefore, if Tottenham want to progress, they are better off making a change now. They have regressed from last season, they have been massively inconsistent,” Sutton added.
The Athletic reported yesterday that Tottenham are yet to enter into any discussions with potential successors for the head coach position until they hold a key meeting with Antonio Conte at the start of April.

I do agree in part, that if Conte is not willing to commit to Spurs then he should just say that now and put everyone’s mind at rest.
With only a fourth-placed finish to play for this year, I do think we are better off sticking with Conte until the end of the season and then giving a new manager the chance to start their project fresh in the summer.
