Hugo Lloris has revealed that he is now close to returning to the pitch after recovering from his knee ligament injury.
Lloris sustained the injury during the Lilywhites’ win over Manchester City on February 5 and it was reported at the time that the Spurs captain was expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks (Sky Sports).
That estimation has proven to be accurate, with the 36-year-old featuring in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Ipswich Town at Hotspur Way last week (The Evening Standard).
Lloris has now admitted that the injury seemed quite innocuous when it happened and that he did not realise the extent of the damage until the next day.
The goalkeeper told the club’s official channel (as relayed by Football.London): “It was a collision with Rodri and when he hit my right leg, I felt a movement.
“My knee didn’t respond. I was ready for the last kick of the game, and I kicked a strange ball!
“At that moment, I realised something was missing. The knee was swollen the next day. Everything feels okay now. I’ll continue to go step by step.”
Fraser Forster has deputised impressively for the Frenchman over the last couple of months but the skipper admitted that he is now not far away from returning to the pitch.
He added: “It was good to be back on the pitch, to have that reference.
“Obviously, it’s been a long journey, but step by step I’m closer to a return. I’ll keep working and I’d like to thank all the staff for their help.”
The next 10 matches could well be Lloris’ final ones in a Tottenham shirt, with reports over recent days indicating that the North London club are ready to cash in on the goalkeeper this summer (Football Insider).
Spurs Web Opinion
There will be a bit of a leadership vacuum after Conte’s departure, which has to be filled by the senior players in the squad. That is why Lloris’ return is very timely.
However, Forster has performed admirably over recent weeks, which means that there is no reason to rush the Frenchman back.
Stellini probably would not start the 36-year-old against Everton unless he is 100 per cent fit.
