Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham Hotspur were not initally planning on freezing season ticket prices but only did so after fan unrest.
Things have not gone according to plan either on and off the pitch for Tottenham this season, with The Telegraph even describing the current situation at Spurs after Antonio Conte’s departure and Fabio Paratici’s leave of absence as the biggest crisis Daniel Levy has faced at the club.
However, the report suggested that despite the team’s struggles, the club were contemplating increasing the cost of season tickets for the next campaign.
That did not sit well with some Spurs fans on social media, given that Tottenham’s season tickets are already among the most expensive in the Premier League.
On Wednesday, Spurs announced that they would be freezing season ticket prizes for the 2023/24 season as they are acutely aware that fans are impacted by the rising cost of living crisis.
Gold believes that Tottenham would not have arrived at the decision if not for the noises of discontent from sections of the fan base.
The journalist said on the Gold and Guest talk Tottenham podcast (as relayed by TBR Football): “Let’s be honest, this wasn’t going to be Spurs’ original decision. We can safely say that this was not the original plan.
“Spurs may well deny that and say ‘we were always going to freeze those season ticket prices’. Personally, I don’t think so from the noises I was hearing beforehand.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The decision to increase season ticket prices could have potentially seen some Spurs fans reach boiling point and could have led to large-scale protests, given the discontent among the fan base with the hierarchy.
The club would have been aware of that, which is why they essentially did not have much of a choice but to freeze season-ticket prices.
