Alasdair Gold has suggested that Julian Nagelsmann would pick Chelsea over Tottenham if both jobs were offered to him in the summer.

It was reported by Football Insider on Friday that Nagelsmann remains Spurs’ top target to replace Antonio Conte.

The report suggested that the North London club were prepared to wait until the summer for the German, who was not planning on taking any job until the end of the season.

It was asserted that the Lilywhites are prepared to do anything in their power to snap up Nagelsmann and they believe that qualifying for Europe would give them an advantage over Chelsea in the race for the 35-year-old.

This report came a few days after an update by Fabrizio Romano, who said on his YouTube Channel last week that the Blues had already contacted Nagelsmann and the recently departed Bayern Munich boss showed interest in taking over at Stamford Bridge.

However, Gold believes that even if Spurs qualify for the Champions League, the Chelsea job would still be more attractive for the German, given the money he would be given to spend at the West London club.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “[Julian] Nagelsmann is similar [to Roberto De Zerbi], he’s a very precise, exciting manager.

“Yes, I think some of the man-management aspect of bigger stars, he probably needs to work on. That’s what was coming out of Bayern.

“But then, let’s be honest, at Spurs, he isn’t going to have as many of those egos to work with, so it would be a good fit.

“Nagelsmann, if you give him the choice of Chelsea and Spurs, he’s going to Chelsea.

“No contest, because even if they’re not in the Champions League, which it looks like they’re very unlikely to be, the money that any manager going into that, to have the backing to do whatever they want with that squad is ridiculous, compared to Spurs.”

I do not think it is as cut and dry as Gold seems to suggest. The reality is that Chelsea have spent quite a bit of money in the last couple of transfer windows and are not going to be in a position to spend similar amounts in the next year or two owing to FFP regulations.

Their squad still looks in need of massive surgery, which might not be possible. Nagelsmann would also have some brilliant weapons upfront at Spurs like Kane and Son, and Chelsea would not be able to buy attackers of that quality no how much money they spend.

Besides, the German will also be aware that just winning a trophy at Spurs will do wonders for his reputation, given that the likes of Mourinho and Conte have failed to achieve that.
