Cristian Stellini has asserted that Tottenham are still very much in the race for Champions League qualification after picking up an important win over Brighton.

It was certainly a must-win game for Tottenham if they were to stay in the race for a top-four finish, particularly since both Newcastle United and Manchester United had picked up wins earlier on Saturday to extend their lead over the Lilywhites to six points.

The performance from Spurs was certainly nothing to write home about, with the Seagulls dominating large parts of the encounter.

However, the Lilywhites did get the job done, courtesy of some excellent finishing from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, as well as some luck, with some key referring decisions going their way.

The result just about keeps Tottenham’s hopes for a top-four finish alive, especially since they have six-pointers to come against both Newcastle and Man Utd over the coming weeks.

When asked after his side’s 2-1 win on Saturday if a top-four finish is a realistic objective, Stellini told Football.London: “Yes because today we played against a tough opponent, today we played with aggressiveness, we tried to press them very high.

“When they play through the keeper, we try to push them back.”

The Italian praised the fight his players showed and credited the players who came off the bench to help Spurs see out the win.

Stellini continued: “It was a similar game we played against (Manchester) City this season.

“I think also we went one goal up in the second half and when we compare with the last two games, we fight a lot and we achieve the result because we were compact and we were all together involved.

“Also the players that came in like Danjuma, Tanganga and Pape, they were involved in the way you have to be to win the game. I am very happy for that.”

While the win was certainly important, that performance certainly did not fill me with any confidence.

If we play like that for the rest of the season, I cannot see us picking up the six more wins that we realistically need to squeeze into the Champions League places.
