Former Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela has been speaking about Mauricio Pochettino, and admitted he can understand why large sections of the Spurs fans are keen for the Argentine to return to the club.

Lamela played under Pochettino during the latter’s time in North London, and clearly has fond memories of working with the highly-rated coach.

With Spurs looking for a new manager once again after parting ways with Antonio Conte, Pochettino’s name has been mentioned time and time again regarding a possible reunion with the Lilywhites. Reports suggest the 51-year-old is also keen to return (The Athletic).

However, it is thought Pochettino is not actually a part of the shortlist of prospective managers Spurs are looking at (Daily Star).

That is, despite intense affection from the Spurs fans for their former manager. The away support at Goodison Park last week were heard singing about Pochettino and clearly have their heart set on seeing the popular manager back in the Spurs dugout (Football.London).

Now, speaking to The Times, Lamela explained how he feels about Pochettino and suggested the manager going back to Spurs would make sense.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to Mauricio for a while but I feel huge appreciation for the years we spent together, it was a long time and we shared a lot of things.

“Mauricio was a very intelligent coach, who knew always how to lead the group in the best way. He loved working hard, improving, that sense of competition.

“He was always looking for every detail. He had lots of qualities and that showed in the results that we had.”

On the feelings of the fans, Lamela added: “I think the fans have great affection for him because of all the things he did for the club, during all the years he was there.

“He put the club at the top, both in England and in Europe, and for many years, and at Tottenham that shouldn’t be underestimated.

“The fans enjoyed that. I hear they want him back. I understand it, whether it will happen, I don’t know.”

What Pochettino achieved at Spurs was brilliant given the circumstances, but I’m a firm believer we should move on.

Better not to tarnish the memory of what came before. I’d rather we look for a new manager to start a new project than pile expectations on Pochettino to work wonders again.
