With Tanguy Ndombele’s loan deal at Napoli nearing its conclusion, details have emerged regarding the finer details of the move that suggest the Italian club are not obligated to make the transfer a permanent one.

Ndombele was Tottenham’s record transfer signing when he arrived from Lyon back in 2019, but has failed to make the desired impact during his time in North London.

The Frenchman amassed 91 appearances for Spurs, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists (Transfermarkt).

Since Antonio Conte arrived at the club, Ndombele spent the latter half of last season on loan at former club Lyon. He was then shipped out to Napoli in the summer for a season-long loan.

Napoli are flying high in Serie A and look set to seal the title there. With it, would come Champions League football once more, and there had been reports that qualifying for that competition would lead to an obligation to purchase Ndombele in the summer (Football Insider).

According to the latest from Football.London, that is not the case. Despite the suggestion that a fee of 30m euros (£26.3m) would be expected should Napoli finish in the top four in Italy, it seems there have been some mixed reports on the matter.

It is thought there is “no mechanism in the original transfer” that would turn the purchase option into an obligation based on Napoli’s Champions League status.

The report adds that it will be up to Luciano Spalletti whether to keep the player permanently or not.

If not, Ndombele could return to Spurs and try to fight for his place once more, or, it is thought to be “more likely” that he would move on again.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think Tanguy Ndombele will forever be the most frustrating player we have ever had on our books at Spurs.

He could and should be one of the most gifted players at our disposal, and would be the perfect solution to our need for a creative midfielder, but it simply is never going to work out for whatever reason.
