Daniel Levy has remarked that while every single chairman in the Premier League dreams of having a manager for 10 years, it has become increasingly difficult given the competitive nature of the top flight.

Levy has come under plenty of criticism for some of his recent managerial hires, with his strategy of appointing proven winners in Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte backfiring.

That is perhaps why reports indicate that Tottenham are now keen on appointing a young, up-and-coming manager, who is open to building a long-term project at the North London club (Gary Jacob- beIN SPORTS).

Names such as Julian Nageslmann, Luis Enrique, Arne Slot and Vincent Kompany have been put forward over recent weeks as contenders to take over from Conte at the end of the season (Daily Star).

Levy pointed out that in England, there is almost too much focus on the head coach’s role instead of looking at the club more holistically (The debating society of Cambridge University):

“I think whenever you appoint a coach you’re employing someone because you think they’re going to make you win.

“You don’t appoint them with the intention that it’s only going to be for one year or two years. You hope it will be long term.

“I think every chairman dreams that (they will be there for ten years). I think it’s very, very difficult in the competitive nature of football today that you have continuity of a manager over a long period of time.

“If you look on the continent, it’s so difficult to how it is in England. In England, we all dream of having managers for five, six, seven or eight years.

“In Europe, in other countries, coaches are appointed for two years. They are far less important, the media attention is not on the coach, it’s much more about the club.

“It’s a cultural thing we have in England. The manager is almost bigger than the club when in reality he isn’t.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think one can make the case that hiring and firing head coaches relatively frequently is not a big problem as long as there is a clear philosophy being driven from upstairs.

We have seen an increasing number of English clubs moving towards the direction of the football model over the last 10 to 15 years, which is why head coaches are seen as increasingly dispensable.
