The Sun’s Tom Barclay has suggested that the chances of Mauricio Pochettino returning to Tottenham might have been boosted by Fabio Paratici’s resignation.
It emerged on Thursday evening that Fabio Paratici’s appeal against his worldwide ban was unsuccessful, with the Italian subsequently resigning from his role at Tottenham on Friday morning.
According to reports, Daniel Levy is now expected to hire a new director of football rather than promoting anyone internally (Daily Mail).
The sudden development does not come at the ideal time for Spurs, who are on the lookout for a new head coach to replace Antonio Conte.
Until a couple of days ago, reports had indicated that Spurs were set to hold discussions with Luis Enrique and were also keen to talk to Arne Slot but Mauricio Pochettino was not in consideration for the role (90 min).
However, Barclay believes that the situation might have changed after Paratici’s departure as the 51-year-old was against the idea of Pochettino returning and was the one who was pushing Enrique’s case.
The journalist said on The Tottenham Way Podcast about the Italian’s resignation: “It will be interesting to see how this affects the managerial search.
“They’re almost looking at a Director of Football as well as a manager right now.
“That complicates it in some ways, but in others it simplifies it. The power is in Daniel Levy’s hands now.
“We’re led to believe that Paratici was more sceptical about Mauricio Pochettino, so perhaps it may increase the chances of a return for Pochettino.
“Luis Enrique was very much favoured by Paratici, so maybe he slips down the list now.”

Rather than hiring another director of football, Levy now has the option to appoint Pochettino as the manager rather than just the head coach, thus returning to the same set-up that the club had back in 2019.
While that seems unlikely to happen, it is a move that would certainly go down well with the fans.
