Mundo Deportivo have now claimed that Tottenham could strike an agreement with Barcelona to extend Clement Lenglet’s loan spell at the club by another 12 months.

Tottenham do not have the option to buy Lenglet permanently when his loan spell ends this summer and the Lilywhites would thus have to enter into negotiations with Barcelona if they wish to snap up the Frenchman.

Reports in Spain over the last couple of weeks have talked up the possibility of the centre-back making a permanent switch to North London.

The print edition of Marca (via Sport Witness) claimed on April 14 that Barca ‘will try to get Tottenham’ to buy the 27-year-old this summer as Xavi Hernandez already has enough options at centre-back.

This was followed by a report in Sport two days later, which suggested that Spurs are ‘advancing in the negotiations’ with the Catalan club for the defender and that the two clubs could soon strike a deal worth around €14m (£12.3m) for the former Sevilla man.

Mundo Deportivo have now proposed an alternate solution, suggesting that the clubs could extend Lenglet’s loan spell in North London by another 12 months.

The publication adds that ‘several teams’ across Europe have also expressed an interest in snapping up the centre-back.

Tottenham and Barca will reportedly meet soon to discuss Lenglet’s future, with the outlet stating that ‘everything remains open as of today’.

Given Barca’s financial issues, they would be determined to sell Lenglet this summer, whether it is to Spurs or another club.

The La Liga giants would not be willing to loan the centre-back out for another season and allow his value to depreciate further.

The decision on whether Spurs push ahead with a move for the Frenchman could be left with whoever is appointed as the club’s head coach.
