Alasdair Gold has explained why Tottenham’s set-piece coach, Gianni Vio, has remained at the club and revealed that Perry Suckling, Chris Powell and Michel Vorm could return to the club to assist Ryan Mason until the end of the season.

It came as no surprise when Tottenham announced on Monday that Cristian Stellini and the rest of Antonio Conte’s coaching staff had departed following the 6-1 thumping at the hands of Newcastle United.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick revealed on Tuesday morning that Vio had remained at Spurs while the rest of the coaching staff, including goalkeeping coach Marco Savorani and fitness coaches Stefano Bruno and Costantino Coratti, followed Stellini out of the door.

The journalist also explained that Spurs are yet to finalise Mason’s backroom staff.

Gold has now explained that Vio stayed on since he was not someone Conte brought with him when he arrived through the door.

The journalist also suggested that Vorm, Powell and Suckling could assist Mason just as they did when the 31-year-old was put in charge towards the end of the 2020-21 season.

Gold said on a Q&A on Football.London: “I guess as Vio came in as a later part of the coaching unit and wasn’t someone identified with the Conte/Stellini established set-up, he’s technically his own man. He’ll be one experienced person for Mason to call upon.”

When asked if rumours of Vorm potentially returning to the club are true, the journalist responded: “I’d say that’s probably safe to assume. He gets on well with Mason and Lloris (if he’s not out injured for too long) and he’s well-respected around the club.

“He’s also a strong personality which Spurs need right now. He helped out in 2021 when called upon and I don’t believe he’s attached to any club right now.

“Perry Suckling also stepped up from the academy to help out last time with his experience and you would imagine that will happen again.

“As for the others, we’ll have to wait and see but you would imagine Chris Powell will once again join him.

“I know Spurs were keen to have some experience alongside Mason and that might involve another older head coming in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Not only was Vio not part of Conte’s staff when he arrived but his work is also divorced from the rest of the coaching staff since he just works on set pieces.

In fact, there is no doubt that our set-piece threat has improved since he arrived and one can argue that he deserves to stay.
