According to a hint from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Michael Carrick might become a target for Tottenham Hotspur if Middlesbrough do not win promotion to the Premier League.
Multiple outlets over recent days have reported that Tottenham are now expected to step up their search for a new head coach as Daniel Levy wants a new appointment soon.
Julian Nagelsmann, Arne Slot, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique are thought to be the leading contenders (Football Insider).
However, some other names have also been put forward recently with some sources suggesting that the likes of Brendan Rodgers (ESPN), Xabi Alonso (De Telegraaf) and Ruben Amorim (Evening Standard) might also be in contention.
Crook has now suggested that Carrick could become a shock candidate for the Lilywhites over the coming weeks.
The former Tottenham midfielder has done an excellent job since taking over at the Riverside Stadium, with Boro now having sealed a playoff spot.
Crook told talkSPORT about Spurs’ managerial search: “He’s (Vincent Kompany) definitely on their list of potential targets.
“Michael Carrick would be an interesting one to keep an eye on if Middlesbrough don’t go up.”

Carrick would tick a lot of boxes for Spurs as he is a young, up-and-coming manager, who can build a longer-term project and gets his sides playing possession-based, attacking football.
However, his lack of experience would be a matter of concern and he is certainly not the kind of appointment that would convince Kane or the Spurs fans of the club’s ambition.
