Sky journalist Francesco Modugno has now reported (06/06/23 as relayed by Spazio Napoli and SportWitness) that Tottenham were willing to pay Kim Min-jae’s release clause but the centre-back was not interested in moving to the North London club.

Kim, who has been the standout defender in the Serie A since his switch to Naples last summer, has a release clause of €50m (£43m) in his contract, which is valid from July 1 to July 15 (GIFN).

According to Modugno’s latest update, Tottenham had expressed their intention to sign the South Korean and were even prepared to pay the aforementioned clause to bring him to N17.

Spurs look set to miss out on Kim Min-Jae

However, the Lilywhites’ attempts to do so proved unsuccessful as Kim has instead agreed to join their Premier League rivals, Manchester United.

The report alleges that the project at Old Trafford had ‘great appeal’ to the 26-year-old as the Red Devils were able to offer the player Champions League football while Tottenham were not.

So, with Kim now seemingly heading to United, Ange Postecoglou might have to look elsewhere to bolster his backline.

Kim was never really a realistic target for Tottenham this summer, given that the South Korean was one of the best-performing centre-backs across Europe during 2022-23.

I fear the lack of European football next season might also end up derailing Spurs’ pursuit of the likes of Maddison and Guehi.
