The Telegraph have revealed that West Ham United have moved into pole position ahead of the likes of Tottenham in the race for Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.
Despite Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League, Barnes scored 13 league goals in 2022-23, which is seemingly why he is attracting so much interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Telegraph name Spurs as one of the clubs eyeing a move for the England international but they state that the North London club are yet to formalise their plans following the arrival of head coach Ange Postecoglou.
West Ham move to front of Harvey Barnes queue
Barnes is also said to be on the radars of both Aston Villa and Newcastle United but it is asserted that the Hammers have now moved to the front of the queue for the player’s signature.
The report explains that David Moyes’ men are expected to receive a cash influx after sanctioning Declan Rice’s £92m move to Arsenal, with the Leicester star being one of their priority targets ahead of their foray into the Europa League next season.
It is asserted that the Foxes value Barnes at around £40m but that figure is expected to drop following their relegation, with West Ham expected to start bidding at £30m for the winger.
Spurs Web Opinion
If we could sign one of just Maddison and Barnes from Leicester, I would actually prefer the latter to the former.
Not only is Barnes younger and likely to be cheaper but he is also more versatile and offers more out of possession.
Postecoglou’s system relies on quick counter-pressing, which might be one area where Maddison might struggle as his work off the ball is not his strong point.
