CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Tottenham Hotspur do hold an interest in Jadon Sancho but he remarked that the Manchester United man’s wages could be a stumbling block in any potential deal.

Sancho has flattered to deceive since his big-money move to Manchester United two years ago, with the pacy wide-man having scored just 12 goals and provided six assists in 79 appearances for the Red Devils (Transfermarkt).

We relayed a report from The Daily Star on June 10, which suggested that Tottenham were ready to test the waters with a £50m offer for the England international.

The report claimed that Erik Ten Hag’s men could consider cashing in on the former Borussia Dortmund man this summer if they receive a bid of around £60m.

Tottenham are not alone in their admiration for Sancho, with Football Transfers reporting a couple of days ago that Aston Villa are also monitoring the winger’s situation.

Salary would be a problem for Spurs in Sancho deal

Jacobs has now played down the chances of Spurs swooping for the 23-year-old, pointing out that the big transfer fee and salary involved might put off the Lilywhites.

When asked about the speculation linking Sancho with a move to Tottenham, the journalist said on The Last Word On Spurs Podcast: “This was a story that broke about five days ago and I think that it’s gathering a little bit of pace.

“I know that some people will say it’s all just agent talk but I think it’s more than that.

“I think that Tottenham are looking at the possibility of Sancho because they see a real opportunity due to the player’s age and profile.

“But there are complications – one is fee and two is wages. Manchester United, as I understand it, don’t have Sancho at the top of their list to sell.

“So, what will happen first is a conversation between Sancho and Erik ten Hag to understand the pathway for the player at Manchester United and the expectations for him heading into next season.

“And if Sancho moved to Tottenham, he may feel that he can get more game time and we wait and see whether that is a defining factor or not.

“So, wages might be a problem but fee-wise, for the right number, Manchester United would consider a sale and I think that number is going to be quite high.

“I don’t think Sancho is going to be available in the market for under £50m, it might even push £60m. So, it’s a big outlay.”

Spurs Web Opinion

According to Sportac, Sancho currently earns £350,000 a week at Manchester United, which is considerably higher than our highest-earning players – Harry Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Son Heung-min.

So, unless the England star agrees to take at least a substantial pay cut to come to Spurs, I do not see how a deal would be possible.
