Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United are expected to push ahead with a move for Tottenham Hotspur target James Maddison this week.
Romano took to social media to claim that Maddison remains a top target for the Magpies, who are now ready to ‘insist’ on the attacking midfielder over the coming days.
He explained that Eddie Howe’s men do not want a long-running saga and are expected to make a decision on the 26-year-old ‘soon’.
Newcastle to push for Spurs target Maddison
The journalist added that Spurs are continuing to talk to Maddison’s entourage and are ‘pushing’ to get the deal done but he revealed that the North London club are yet to submit an offer for the player.
The Foxes playmaker has been heavily linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer after City’s relegation from the Premier League with Newcastle and Spurs set to go head to head for his signature.

This update from Romano comes a day after a report from The Northern Echo, which asserted that Tottenham were ‘strong favourites’ to win the race for the Leicester star’s signature.
The publication claimed that Maddison prefers to live in London over the North East and that the Lilywhites are ready to offer him a higher salary than Newcastle.
The England international has just 12 months left to run on his current contract, meaning Leicester could lose him for free in the summer of 2024.
Spurs Web Opinion
From Romano’s update, it sounds like Newcastle want some clarity on their pursuit of Maddison over the next few days so that they can turn their attention to other targets if a move for the 26-year-old is not feasible.
Tottenham still appear to have the upper hand in the race for the England international’s signature, with the player seemingly being keen on a move to N17.
Newcastle are, however, able to offer him Champions League football over Spurs, who failed to qualify for European competition next season after a disappointing eighth place finish in the Premier League table.
