Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi has admitted that Guglielmo Vicario’s impending sale to Tottenham is a source of ‘pride’ for the Italian club as it vindicates the investment they made in the goalkeeper a couple of years ago.
Vicario first caught the eye of most Italian football fans during his loan spell at Empoli during the 2021-22 season, which persuaded the club to take up the option to sign the goalkeeper permanently for €8m (£6.8m) last summer.
It has proven to be an inspired decision as the Serie A club are now on the verge of making more than double the fee from his sale on the back of the former Cagliari star enjoying another impressive season at the Carlo Castellani Stadium in 2022-23.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday evening that Spurs had reached a full agreement with Empoli on a €19m (£16.3m) fee, with the goalkeeper now expected in London to complete his medical.
Spurs were not the only club eyeing Vicario this summer, with 90 min reporting earlier this week that the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus, AS Roma and Fiorentina had all expressed their interest in the 26-year-old.

Empoli President is proud to see Vicario join Spurs
Corsi has now admitted that he is over the moon to see Empoli’s plans for the shot-stopper paying off.
He told Italian station Lady Radio (22/06 as relayed by The Evening Standard): “We bought him back to sell him on. We also paid a lot to sign him considering our finances.
“It’s a source of pride for us that the top teams have him in their sights. He’s also a special person, not just as a footballer.”

Everyone who follows Italian football seems to be convinced that Vicario is the real deal and it appears as if Spurs might have secured a bargain.
Hopefully, the funds saved will give the North London club a little more leeway when spending to strengthen other priority areas like attacking midfield and central defence.
