Alasdair Gold has revealed that while Tottenham Hotspur remain keen on signing James Maddison, the North London club have identified other ‘strong alternatives’ if a move for the attacking midfielder proves beyond their reach.
It has been widely reported over the last couple of weeks that Maddison is one of Ange Postecoglou’s priority targets this summer (Telegraph).

Over the last couple of days, some outlets have talked up Spurs‘ chance of winning the race for the Leicester star in light of Newcastle’s move for Sandro Tonali.
The Guardian claimed on Thursday that the Magpie’s approach for the Milan star could clear the path for Tottenham to snap up Maddison while The Daily Mail stated on the same day that the Lilywhites are growing in confidence that they could beat Eddie Howe’s men to the England international.
Tottenham still have alternatives to Maddison
Gold has now explained that the 26-year-old has been on Spurs’ radar for quite a long-time and the club view him as a ‘perfect fit’ for Postecoglou but he asserted that they have backup options in mind if they find Leicester’s asking price to be excessive.
When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Maddison, the journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “Maddison is a player who Spurs have looked at for years, since he started off at Coventry, and they’ve clearly regretted not pushing harder for him in the past.
“This feels like the summer when if they want to get it done, he’s there to be signed.
“The price for someone with just 12 months left on their deal, as with Raya, is going to be a hurdle to overcome but ultimately Tottenham must decide just how much they want and need Maddison.
“He is a perfect fit for the Postecoglou system and with Newcastle moving for Tonali, albeit a different kind of midfielder, there are question marks over whether they will also splash out big on the Leicester man.
“With Maddison also represented by Base, who have a heavy presence at Spurs in Postecoglou, Son, Porro, Richarlison and many of the young stars of the academy, it feels like an easy fit if they can come to an agreement on the fee.
“A bit like the early move for Richarlison last summer, this feels like it could be a statement signing for Spurs that sends a message to the squad and the fans.
“There will be strong alternatives on their list, as there were for Raya, but Maddison feels like a big signing to excite everyone.”

I just do not see Tottenham being ready to pay £50m for a player with one year left on his contract.
One would think that Leicester would bring down their asking price as the window progresses but the question for Spurs is how long they are prepared to wait to fill a priority position.
