Tottenham legend and South Korea boss Jurgen Klinsmann is of the opinion that Son Heung-min can play as a central attacking midfielder.
Klinsmann has not had the best of starts to his stint as South Korea‘s head coach, with the Taegeuk Warriors having drawn two and lost two of his first four games in charge.
The German was without his captain for the 1-0 loss to Peru last week, with Son recovering from a sports hernia operation.
The Tottenham man did get a little over 20 minutes under his belt after coming on in the 69th minute against El Salvador on Monday but he was not able to drag his side to a win, with the Asian nation being held to a 1-1 draw.
Heung-min Son as a creative midfielder
Klinsmann has now discussed the possibility of using the 30-year-old as a number eight during the Asia Cup in Qatar, which starts in January of next year – a tournament in which South Korea will enter as one of the favourites.
He said (via Sungmo Lee): “I’m thinking about 2 top systems in Asian Cup and giving Son Heung-min a ‘no.8’ role as well as most of the teams will come out with defensive tactics against us.”
The German added: “There are many ways, I can put Sonny as No.10 behind 2 strikers or No.7 on the side, when you have a player like Sonny you need to go forward as he’s an incredible scorer.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would make sense for South Korea to use Son as an eight as he is their best player and Klinsmann would want the 30-year-old to see as much of the ball as possible in the final third.
However, I do not think Postecoglou would consider using the forward in a central role.
