Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has suggested that Kyogo Furuhashi is not quite at the required level to be a regular starter at Tottenham Hotspur even if Harry Kane leaves the club.
Furuhashi has been a revelation since his switch from J-League side Vissel Kobe to Celtic two years ago, with the Japanese international feasting on the defences in Scotland.
The 28-year-old scored 34 times and provided five assists across all competitions in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt), winning the Golden Boot and the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award.
Unsurprisingly, there has been speculation linking the centre-forward with a move to Tottenham since Ange Postcoglou took over at the North London club (The Sun).
It emerged last week that Furuhashi is also on Burnley’s radar, with Vincent Kompany allegedly looking to bolster the Clarets’ forward line ahead of their return to the top flight (Daily Record).
Lennon has doubts over Furuhashi to Tottenham
Lennon has now said that while the Celtic star is good enough to succeed in the Premier League, he expressed doubts regarding whether he is ready to make the step up to a club like Tottenham.
When asked if Furuhashi could be a hit under Postecoglou at Spurs, the 52-year-old told The Daily Mail: “I have my doubts. I don’t think for one minute that he could replace Harry Kane, for example, if that was to be the case.
“He’s a good player. I like his style. I’m just not sure he could play consistently at the highest level in the Premier League on a week-to-week basis.
“The other thing is that you’ve got Kane there at the minute, you’ve got (Heung-Min) Son, (Dejan) Kulusevski, Richarlison.
“These are world-class players that he’d need to break into if he goes to Spurs. I think he could play in the Premier League. But maybe just not at the top end at the minute.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Looking at how different players have fared when they have moved from England up to Scotland over recent years, it is fair to say that the Scottish top-flight is comparable in quality to League One, which is why success up north is far from a guarantee of success in the Premier League.
However, having said that, there is immense pressure involved in playing for a club like Celtic, who are expected to win the league every year, and Furuhashi has proven that he can cope with those high expectations.
