Ange Postecoglou has said that he is not wedded to any particular formation and is open to tweaking the system based on the characteristics of the players at his disposal.
The current make-up of the Spurs squad is geared towards playing a 3-4-3 under Antonio Conte.
That is perhaps why reports indicate that the club are expected to make wholesale changes to the squad ahead of next season (The Athletic), with Postecoglou tending to set teams up in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1.
The signing of James Maddison certainly solves one problem for the Australian, whose systems are reliant on the midfielders making forward forays and having an impact in the final third.
Postecoglou is not worried about formation at Spurs
However, Postecoglou has now suggested that formations are not particularly important, given the fluidity that exists at the highest level of the game.
The 56-year-old also reiterated that his priority would be to get the best out of the playing resources he has at the North London club.
He said on the club’s official channel: “I think if you look at my career I’ve sort of played different formations. A lot of that depends on the players you have at your disposal.
“I’ve got to the space in terms of football where I just think that kind of set formations are just… not a thing of the past, but there’s such fluidity in football these days – especially at the highest level, we’re talking Premier League – you really need players who are able to perform multiple functions and roles within the side.
“For the most part, I’ve kind of played a 4-3-3 but you couldn’t probably pinpoint many moments in the game where that actually exists. It’s more about movement and space.
“For me, the key thing will be to have a real good look at the playing group and see what strengths they have and then come up with a formation that will bring the best out of them.”

As Postecoglou points out the formation does not matter as much as the specific roles that players are assigned on and off the ball.
The one thing that seems fairly clear is that the Australian will be using a back four rather than a back three.
