The latest report on the situation regarding Clement Lenglet’s future reveals that, despite Tottenham Hotspur’s willingness to sign the player, and Barcelona’s wish to sell, the deal is making very little progress as things stand.
After a season-long loan with Tottenham last year, during which time he made 35 appearances (Transfermarkt), Lenglet has now returned to Spain to rejoin Barcelona and assess the options for his future.
Despite reports claiming the Spanish side needed to sell the Frenchman by the end of June (sport.es), Lenglet is still a Barcelona player at this moment in time and the next step in his career remains unclear.
Fabrizio Romano recently revealed Lenglet was no longer a priority for Spurs this summer. But, Barcelona president Joan Laporta told La Vanguardia he was optimistic an agreement with the North London side was on the horizon.
As Spurs pursue centre-backs like Micky van de Ven (The Athletic) and Edmond Tapsoba (Alasdair Gold), it remains to be seen if and when a deal for Lenglet will materialise.
Clement Lenglet deal stalling
According to the latest from Mundo Deportivo, Lenglet is set to join up with Barcelona for pre-season on July 10 as negotiations with Tottenham are stalling.
The report claims the Lilywhites are “interested in” the 28-year-old, and the defender is one of many “open folders” Barcelona are trying to close this summer.
Apparently, Lenglet is “not convincing” Barca coach Xavi and it is hoped he can be offloaded imminently.
The problem is, the deal for the centre-half is seeing little in the way of “progress” right now.
Nevertheless, the player himself is not believed to be “nervous” about the situation, and it seems Lenglet would be happy enough to stay at Barcelona if no suitable offers come his way.
Spurs Web Opinion
I could take or leave a deal for Lenglet this summer.
If we can get him really cheap, then he could be a useful asset to the squad, but I would not lose sleep if we don’t end up signing him.
I think there are better options out there, who may cost a little more, but would be worthwhile.
