Sky Germany have revealed in their live transfer blog (July 7, 9:39 pm) that Tottenham Hotspur have expressed interest in signing Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Ko Itakura.
Tottenham are already reported to be in talks over deals for two Bundesliga centre-halves in Bayern Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven (Fabrizio Romano).
Tottenham are interested in Ko Itakura
If Sky Germany’s latest update is to be believed, Ange Postecoglou’s men are also eyeing another centre-back who plies his trade in Germany, in the form of Itakura.
The Japanese international was signed by Manchester City back in 2018 but did not play a single game for Pep Guardiola’s men, spending the next three seasons on loan at Groningen in the Eredivisie.
Itakura then had an impressive loan spell at Schalke in the German second tier during the 2021-22 season before making a permanent switch to Gladbach last summer.
The 26-year-old missed a significant chunk of the first half of last season due to a knee injury but he has not looked back since regaining full fitness, establishing himself as an indispensable part of the club’s backline.
Sky Germany suggests that Itakura could now be on his way out of Borussia Park, just 12 months after arriving at the club.
The publication states that Spurs and Napoli have now both reached out to Gerardo Seoane’s men about a deal for the central defender.

If there is truth to this report, then Tottenham’s interest in Itakura is undoubtedly being driven by Posteocoglou, given his expertise in the Asian market, and Japanese football in particular.
The Australian came up against the 26-year-old during his time in the J-League with Yokohama F Marinos.
