Ange Postecoglou has admitted that the style of football he is associated with was one of the reasons that he was hired by Tottenham, with Spurs fans hungry to watch some entertaining football at N17.
Throughout his coaching career, Postecoglou has been open about the fact that he prioritises a brave, front-foot and aggressive style of football.
Spurs fans would be hoping that the 56-year-old can make the team extremely watchable, especially having endured a counter-attacking and, at times, negative approach under their last three managers in Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.
Postecoglou hints that fans will enjoy his style of football
Postecoglou has assured Tottenham supporters that the team will try to deliver the kind of football that would keep them on the edge of their seats.
When asked about the importance of delivering entertaining football, the new Spurs head coach told Football.London: “I think it’s fair to say that’s a fit for who I am as a manager and the kind of teams I’ve produced in the past because I’ve had a lot of success in my career but it’s also been done on the back of playing a certain way. I dare to say that was probably part of, one of the biggest factors in the club appointing me was that they saw that, that’s what I’m going to try and deliver.
“That seems to be the right fit for this club in terms of the fans’ expectations. We call it entertainment but also win games of football, score goals, be exciting. They don’t want to see their team sit back. There are different ways of winning games but the intent for us will be to try and make sure this football club is a compelling watch for everybody.”
Postecoglou will have his work cut out as he is arriving at Tottenham on the back of a poor campaign, which saw the team failing to qualify for Europe for the first time in 2009.
However, the Australian insisted that it is the size of the challenge that excites him the most about the job ahead of him.
He was also quizzed about the prospect of taking over a job which some of the most high-profile managers in the world have failed in, he responded: “It’s the bit I love the best. I’ve said it in the past. I’ve been fortunate in the past because I’ve had success but whenever I reflect on any job I’ve had, it’s not the success that I look back on, it’s the build that I look back on because I know it’s not always going to be smooth, there’s going to be plenty of doubters which is when your belief and resolve gets doubted.
“Not just for me personally, but the whole club, the whole group and I love working through that, getting out the other side and that’s the biggest attraction for me in this position. Aside from being in a massive football club and the premier competition in the world, was the opportunity to do something that people will see in many respects unsurmountable. I love that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
You can argue that now is really the best time for any up-and-coming manager like Postecoglou to take the Spurs job. The expectations are quite low on the back of the season the club have had and the Australian will not be blamed entirely if the team fails to finish in the top six again next season.
However, if the 57-year-old can guide the team to a top-four finish or a domestic trophy, his reputation will skyrocket as he would have achieved something that even the likes of Pochettino, Mourinho and Conte failed to – bring silverware back to N17.
