Jamie O’Hara has said that Tottenham’s acquisition of James Maddison is the signing of the summer transfer window so far, insisting that the attacking midfielder’s real value was around £60m-£70m.
Coming into the transfer window, it was clear that Tottenham needed to sign a number eight as the squad was devoid of creative midfielders, owing to Antonio Conte’s preference for workman-like players in the middle of the park.
Maddison was undoubtedly one of the best players available on the market for that role, with the 26-year-old producing outstanding output for Leicester ever since joining the Foxes back in 2018.
Spurs fans will be hoping that the England international can take his game up a notch or two now that he is surrounded by better players and is set to play under a manager who likes his midfielders to get into the opposition box.
Maddison should be worth £60m or £70m
O’Hara believes that Tottenham have got an absolute steal by signing Maddison for a reported fee of just £40m.
When asked to name the signing of the summer so far, the former Spurs star told Grosvenor Casino: “Declan Rice will be a brilliant signing but I think James Maddison to Spurs could be the signing of the season so far, not because I’m a Spurs fan but because I think we got an incredible deal.
“We’ve paid £40 million for one of the best creative players in the Premier League over the past few seasons and he’s probably worth £60 or 70 million so it’s a great price, not to mention that we sold them Harry Winks to Leicester for £10 million.
“It’s a signing we’ve needed and that we’ve been after for ages so for me he’s the signing of the summer because of what it represents for Tottenham.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even though Maddison had just one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, I expected Leicester to hold out for £50m-£55m for the attacking midfielder.
However, Spurs got a little fortunate as Newcastle were not prioritising a number eight while the other big club who were in the market for an attacking midfielder, Manchester United, were focused on Mason Mount.
That meant that Leicester knew that a bidding war was not going to ensue for Maddison, which is perhaps why they ended up accepting Tottenham’s offer.
