Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes that Tottenham should be aiming for a top-six finish next season as Champions League qualification might be beyond the Lilywhites.

Spurs have a massive rebuilding job on their hands this summer after floundering to an eighth-place finish last season, which means there will be no European football in N17 for the first time since 2009.

The club have decided to go in a new direction with the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, who has been clear that he wants to bring possession-based, attacking football to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Football.London).

The club have made a solid start to the transfer window, making Dejan Kulusevski’s loan move permanent and bringing in three new faces in James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon.

However, there is clearly a lot more work to be done if Spurs hope to close the gap with the best sides in the Premier League.

Arsenal legend thinks Spurs will miss out on top four

Parlour believes that Postecoglou should set his sights on Europa League qualification in his first season at Tottenham.

The former Gunners midfielder told Genting Casino: “Spurs and Ange Postecoglou should be targeting a top-six finish. We don’t know how Ange will do in the Premier League.

“He’s a very good manager and did a great job with Celtic but Scottish football is easier than England. I’m sure Steven Gerrard would tell you that as well.

“The league is so competitive and whilst they’ll want to push for the top four, it won’t be easy so they should focus on a top six finish.

“One thing is for sure, Maddison is a good signing and I’m sure Harry Kane will be getting a lot more opportunities to score if he stays at Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The one thing we have seen time and again over the last few years is that pre-season predictions tend to be woefully wrong as the Premier League is much more competitive than it has ever been.

For example, no one expected Arsenal to even finish in the top four, let alone challenge for the title at the start of last season while hardly anyone predicted Spurs and Chelsea to do as woefully as they did.

So, Postecoglou would go into the season with an open mind and would not want to put limits on the side by specifying objectives. Having said that, most Spurs fans would probably take a top-six finish as long as the team plays entertaining football and there are signs of progress.
