Ange Postecoglou has revealed that he left the decision on whether to travel with rest of the Tottenham Hotspur squad for pre-season tour of Australia and Asia was left with Hugo Lloris.

Lloris had admitted back in May that he was looking for a new challenge away from Tottenham following eleven years at the North London club (Nice-Matin).

Spurs have already moved to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli this summer, with the Italian expected to take over the number-one shirt from the Frenchman.

Tottenham confirmed last week that the experienced goalkeeper had decided to stay back in London rather than flying out with the squad to Australia so that he could explore ‘transfer opportunities’.

90 min reported over the weekend that Lloris is studying the various proposals he has on the table from Saudi Arabia as well as from across Europe.

Postecoglou speaks on Hugo Lloris’ hopes to leave Spurs

Postecoglou has now explained that he had a frank conversation with the 36-year-old, who made it clear that he wanted a new challenge away from N17.

The Australian also commended the goalkeeper on the mark he has made on Tottenham, remaking that it is not the sort of ending the former Lyon man wanted to his journey at N17.

When asked about Lloris, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah I had a good chat with Hugo. He’s been an outstanding servant for this football club for quite a long time. Captain of the club, and has left an indelible mark on Tottenham Hotspur football club. I had a chat with him and he felt that he’s hoping for a move somewhere else so he can play and begin the next phase of his career. I had a good chat with and left it up to him whether he wanted to come along because I think he deserves that respect to garner the direction of his own future. Because of his standing.

“I’ve only had two or three chats with him but even in training I can see he’s not only an outstanding goalkeeper but an outstanding human being. From my perspective we had an open discussion and he just felt that with a move imminent it would be better for him that rather than bringing him halfway around the world he stays at the training ground and works there and prepares for his next opportunity.

“It doesn’t diminish what he’s contributed to the football club. It’s the hardest thing for a footballer that you can’t write your endings.

“It’s probably not the way he wanted to end his time at Tottenham with everything that he’s contributed, but at the same time I don’t think it needs to be anything other than a positive outcome in that he leaves as someone who’s made a mark at a very big football club, and I guess for all players that’s what they’re looking for.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a shame that Lloris’ time in N17 has ended on a sour note as the Frenchman deserved better, given the brilliant service he has given the club with Tottenham’s 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United having been his last appearance.

The 36-year-old is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper Spurs have had in the Premier League era and he will always be held in high esteem by the supporters.

He came to the club at a time when we were struggling and stuck with us even when he could have quite easily joined one of Europe’s elite clubs during his prime.
