Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he is yet to decide who will be Tottenham’s captain, remarking that he is now studying the leadership attributes of the players closely to assess who has the qualities he is looking for.
One of the first big decisions that Postecoglou faces at Spurs is deciding who gets the captain’s armband from Hugo Lloris, with Tottenham’s long-serving number one looking set to leave.
Under normal circumstances, one would expect Harry Kane to be given the armband but the striker’s future at the club remains in doubt, with Bayern Munich (Florian Plettenberg) and more recently, Paris Saint-Germain (Gianluca Di Marzio) looking to snap up the striker.
Postecoglou will not rush in picking Spurs captain
Postecoglou has stated that he is not looking for a captain who is necessarily loud in the dressing room but rather a player who leads by example.
When asked if he has made a decision on who his captain is going to be, the Australian told Football.London: “No, not yet. Again, it’s about me getting to know the group and allowing that to develop.
“Some of those things you’re better off letting it grow organically rather than forcing things and having preconceived ideas.
“I just want to see how the group works. And like I say, so far the whole group has been really strong in terms of committing to what we’re going to do, and that’s what you want to see.
“Within that you see individuals who will look to lead, and they all lead in different ways.
“It’s not always the loudest or the highest profile, it’s sometimes by actions and what I’m looking for is leadership within the whole group. Guys that are prepared to take some responsibility for what we’re about to embark on.”
Postecoglou insisted that signing a backup to Guglielmo Vicario is not something that is a priority for him at the moment.
When asked if Spurs will sign another goalkeeper if and when Lloris seals a move away, the 57-year-old remarked: “So far, Fraser is not with us, he’s obviously recovering from his injury but it’s fair to say that Guglielmo Vicario has settled in really well with the group. He’s a good guy and an exceptional goalkeeper.
“At the moment I’m pretty comfortable. It’s fair to say that my interests are kind of elsewhere in terms of incoming goalkeepers at the moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is quite obvious that the only reason Postecoglou is delaying his decision on the captaincy is due to the uncertainty over Kane’s future.
Had the Australian been assured that the 29-year-old would be staying at the club, it would have been a no-brainer to offer the captain’s armband to the striker.
