Ange Postecoglou has admitted that it is surreal to think he has finally reached the Premier League after watching and talking about the competition for so many years.

Postecoglou is the first ever Australian to manage a Premier League club and the journey has certainly not been easy for the straight-taking coach.

He started at South Melbourne, having success not just in his home country but also in Japan and Scotland before finally getting a chance in the biggest league in the world.

The 57-year-old revealed that even just five years ago, the English top flight seemed like a distant dream, and admitted that it is hard to fathom he is now right in the thick of it.

Postecolgou also spoke about how he will never compromise on hard work and remarked that he enjoys the big challenge that comes with taking over at Tottenham on the back of a disappointing few years for the club.

When asked if he now feels the weight of the world on his shoulders, Postecoglou replied: “No, I don’t. What I feel is… I can’t believe that I’m actually exactly where I’ve always wanted to be.

It’s just bizarre. Even as recently as maybe five years ago, me and my mates were talking about the Premier League. That’s the competition. And now the stuff we were talking about, I’m right smack bang in the middle of.”

The Australian coach added: “You can’t rely on your skill as a measure to not work as hard as the next person because, invariably in life, the hardest worker will always end up winning. Always. Irrespective of what you’re doing.”

When asked ‘do Tottenham players like to work hard?’, Postecoglou added: “Well, they will. They’ll have no choice. I think most people want to, but you’ve got to give them a reason sometimes.”

Ange seems to have opened up a little more in this interview than in his other media appearances over the last few weeks, where he has maintained a stern exterior and has not given too much away.

One can understand why the 57-year-old would be extremely excited to get going as this is undoubtedly the biggest challenge of his career and the culmination of his two-and-a-half decades in coaching.
