According to the print edition of Marca (17/07/23 – as relayed by Sport Witness), Atletico Madrid are ‘well placed’ to win the race for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Multiple outlets over the last few weeks have claimed that Atletico are at the front of the queue to sign Hojbjerg this summer.

The latest such update came from AS earlier this week (via Sport Witness), with the publication explaining that Diego Simeone is keen on signing a midfield pivot to partner Koke and has identified the Tottenham man as the ‘ideal option’.

The report explained that the Atletico boss does not just admire Dane’s attributes as a player but also his character.

Marca now shed more light on the La Liga club’s pursuit of Hojbjerg, revealing that the Spurs star was one of four names discussed in the recent meeting between Simeone, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, and their sporting director, Andrea Berta.

According to the outlet, Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti and Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi were the other three names that were considered by the Madrid club.

The report claims that an operation for Verratti is difficult because of his very high salary at PSG while Zubimendi’s €60m (£51.5m) release clause complicates the operation for the Sociedad player.

Atletico Madrid are still looking at Hojbjerg

Marca add that Hojbjerg is seen as a better fit and that Atletico are ‘well placed’ to sign the 27-year-old as Tottenham wish to cash in on him.

In addition, it is suggested that Los Rojiblancos have a good relationship with Spurs after negotiating deals for Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty recently, and hope to use that to land the Denmark international.

I do not think Postecoglou or Tottenham would be desperate to offload Hojbjerg.

The Australian will probably be happy to keep the Dane around as a squad player, particularly given that Bentancur is unlikely to be fit for the start of the season.

So, Atletico have to offer around £35m to really tempt Spurs into selling the former Southampton man.
