Destiny Udogie and Ange Postecoglou may well be a match made in heaven, as the young Spurs star discusses his style of play and how it compliments the approach his new manager has discussed with him.

Rewind to August of 2022, and Antonio Conte had just secured the signing of a teenager called Destiny Udogie from Italian side Udinese.

The player would remain with his former club for the 2022/23 campaign in order to further his development before joining up with Spurs.

Less than a year later, and everything is very different in North London. Gone is Antonio Conte, and so too is Fabio Paratici, a man who was integral in arranging the deal for Udogie.

Now, Ange Postecoglou is in charge of first-team affairs at Tottenham, and there is a fairly positive atmosphere around the club.

Udogie is back in London after a successful swansong with Udinese, and now has his sights set firmly on establishing himself with his new club.

Destiny Udogie likes Ange Postecoglou’s style

Speaking to Football.London about his new manager and the way he will fit into Postecoglou’s style of play, Udogie promised fans plenty of attacking runs.

He said: “He doesn’t speak a lot but you can see he knows football. He doesn’t need to speak too much, it’s good. I like his idea of football. He wants to play football with the ball, wants to have the ball. It’s not like I defend and I counter-attack. I want to have the ball.

“Obviously he plays with 4-3-3, so left-back, not left wing-back. I like the way he studies football so it’s good. I’m good because when I started I was a left-back. So it’s not a problem for me. I know how to play it and it’s normal.

“I think left wing-back you are more free to attack, you have more space to attack. Obviously you play full width so it’s different, but left-back you have to defend. It’s more, not difficult, but more busy. There are more options to do.”

And, on the kind of football he likes to play, Udogie added: “I like to attack, to overlap the winger, to cut inside, to come inside driving the ball, different things.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Destiny Udogie could end up being one of the players to benefit the most from Ange Postecoglou and his approach to playing football.

He clearly knows how to attack, but is also a solid defender, too, and should be the perfect left-back for this new-look system.
