Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou could become the first manager on the Premier League chopping block this season, former striker Louis Saha has warned.

Postecoglou is looking to pick up the pieces in North London after Tottenham have experienced plenty of turbulence since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019, with Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and more recently, Antonio Conte all failing to deliver silverware.

Tottenham head into the new season on the back of a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season which will now see them without European football for the first time in well over a decade.

Saha believes Postecoglou could be first manager to be sacked

The start of the transfer window looked promising with the arrivals of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon, however, the club are still yet to bring in a top quality central defender despite having been continually linked with both Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven for some period of time.

Saha, who spent six months at Tottenham as a player was asked by BettingOdds about which manager could be the first out of work, to which he replied: “This is a tough question to answer! I think the Tottenham job is a tough one, and we have seen in the past few years some top managers struggle there. If in the first few games Spurs don’t start well under Postecoglou I could see him being under a bit of pressure.

“The Kane situation hasn’t been solved and it’s a new manager with a new system so there is a lot of question marks, so he is the first name that’s come to mind when I think of the first sacking.

“It is really hard to predict what’s going to happen and in modern football even if you are a manager of a newly promoted team and you struggle in the first 10 games you could get sacked which I just don’t think is fair at all, so it is hard to say.”

It would be an even bigger disaster if Tottenham even contemplated sacking Ange Postecoglou this season, the Australian needs to be given at least a couple of years to look to overhaul the squad and stamp his style of play upon the players.

We have already seen glimpses in pre-season of an exciting, forward-thinking approach to matches which is a welcome sight compared to the counter-attacking and defence-minded styles of Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Daniel Levy and the board have to do everything to give Postecoglou the tools he needs to turn around our fortunes, one significant concern at present is the lack of progress in signing a quality central defender with Edmond Tapsoba an addition which is needed to shore up a leaky backline.

Mauricio Pochettino’s start to life at Spurs was not exactly convincing and he proved with time, he was able to make his mark by implementing his methods.
