Journalist Paul Brown has said that while Tottenham will have their eye on Ivan Toney, they are unlikely to make a move for the Brentford star during the summer transfer window due to his current ban.
While the possibility of Harry Kane remaining at Tottenham has seemingly increased over the past 24 hours after the North London club turned down Bayern Munich’s latest €100m (£86m) offer (Daily Mail), some sources indicate that the German club have not yet given up on their pursuit of the striker (Manel Bonke).
Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Sunday that the Spurs do have contingency plans in place should the 30-year-old leave the club (Football.London).
Toney is thought to be one of the players Tottenham are eyeing as a replacement for Kane, with Football Transfers claiming last month that the Lilywhites have identified the 27-year-old as the ideal profile to fill the England captain’s shoes.
The Bees star, who found the back of the net 21 times last season, is currently serving a ban that ends on January 16, due to an eight-month suspension for breaching gambling rules.
Spurs will want to wait and see with Ivan Toney
Brown believes that while Spurs would indeed have their eye on Toney, the club will look beyond him since they would to replace Kane straight away if he leaves.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think a lot of clubs would like to see Toney come back from his ban, get a few months of football under his belt, see if he’s still the same player or not, and whether it looks like he could go on to be someone who joins the real elite.
“I would be surprised if Spurs went straight in for him. I think it will be a strange one to do when their need is for someone straight away. But further down the line, I think he’s someone they’re definitely keeping an eye on.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I can certainly see a situation where Spurs sign a couple of young forwards this summer to cover for Richarlison (if Kane leaves) before making a big-money move for Toney in January.
There is no doubt in my mind that were it not for the Brentford star’s suspension, he would have been Tottenham’s top target to replace Kane this summer.
