Son Heung-min has admitted that he is over the moon at James Maddison’s arrival at Tottenham, remarking that the 26-year-old is exactly the kind of creative player that the club needed this summer.
Maddison is undoubtedly the most high-profile capture that Tottenham have made during the summer transfer window, with the attacking midfielder addressing a key weakness in the squad.
The former Leicester City man has shown plenty of promising signs in pre-season, combining brilliantly with the forwards in the number eight role.
Speaking to Spurs Play after the 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, Maddison remarked that he is at his best in the role he has been given by Postecoglou, where he can pick the ball up centrally with runners beyond him.
The England international also admitted that the chance to play alongside the likes of Son and Kulusevski was one of the main factors that attracted him to the North London club.
Tottenham may finally have their next Eriksen
Son has now insisted that the midfielder fills the void that was left by Christian Eriksen’s departure a few years ago, adding that the midfielder is settling well into his new surroundings.
When asked about Maddison, the forward told Korean news outlet Sports Chosun: “He’s a player I’ve liked since he played at Leicester City.
“We really needed a creative player like Eriksen, and I think we found the perfect fit. I think Maddison joined the team feeling a lot of responsibility. I’ve talked with him a lot and he has a great personality. He’s meshing well with the team.
“We definitely need to improve how we work together but Maddison is performing well. You could see the positive impact he can have on the team in today’s match (against Shakhtar) and he has a lot of strengths.
“It’s the ability of other players that can help create the conditions in which Maddison can thrive, so I’m doing my best to help him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Maddison is undoubtedly an ideal fit to play as the furthest forward midfielder in Postecoglou’s 4-3-3 system and the 26-year-old will create a lot of goals for the likes of Son over the course of the season.
