The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur might sign a young, up-and-coming striker this summer and wait until the January transfer window to swoop for Ivan Toney.

The report reveals that one of the reasons that Spurs might decide against signing a big-name striker during the current transfer window is to keep open the option of moving for Toney in January.

It is explained that the Brentford striker, who is banned until January 16, 2024, for breaching the FA’s betting rules, is seen as a ‘like-for-like replacement’ for Harry Kane.

The club have allegedly discussed the option of waiting until the January window to make a move for the 27-year-old, who found the back of the net 20 times in the Premier League last season.

Spurs are looking at Gift Orban and Ivan Toney

The outlet adds that Spurs could pursue a less expensive option like Gent’s Gift Orban this summer, with the club’s scouting team having kept a close eye on the Nigerian recently.

The Athletic add that the data on the 21-year-old’s finishing has been extremely impressive and Tottenham will now have to take a judgement call on whether that would be transferable to the Premier League level.

It is revealed that the sense at the North London club is that Orban will be available for £20m plus add-ons this summer.

Waiting until January to go for Toney would be a risky move as there could be plenty of competition for the 27-year-old. Brentford have also shown that they can be pretty tough negotiators.

There is also the possibility that the centre-forward could sign a new deal at the Gtech Community Stadium over the coming months.
