Journalist Paul Brown has tipped James Maddison to become Tottenham Hotspur’s Player of the Year this season, and insists the playmaker can flourish now that Harry Kane has left the club.
After monitoring the England international for years, Tottenham finally made the move to land James Maddison this summer and rescue him from relegation with Leicester City.
The deal to bring Maddison to North London cost a reported £40m (Sky Sports), which could be a bargain if he continues to play the way he did in Spurs’ opening Premier League game.
In a 2-2 draw with Brentford on Sunday afternoon, Maddison pulled all the strings in the Spurs midfield and provided two assists. The 26-year-old also took on the captain’s armband in the second half when Heung-min Son was brought off.
The era of Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham got off to a promising start, and the absence of Harry Kane was not felt half as much as many had feared.
Maddison can shine even without Harry Kane
Despite Kane moving on to Bayern Munich, Paul Brown thinks Spurs will be just fine and can rely on Maddison to fill the creative gap left behind by the England captain.
He told GiveMeSport: “I think he’s capable of being their best player this season. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ends the season as their Player of the Year.
“It’s a tall order and I’ve said before I think in many ways it may actually be easier for him if he’s playing there without Harry Kane because I do think the two of them like to occupy a lot of the same spaces and Spurs haven’t really played with a classic number 10 like that for a long time.
“Maddison is capable of playing as an eight or as a kind of inverted winger as well.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We will obviously miss Harry Kane, but I do believe his departure will allow other players to flourish and we will see some of the squad really step up. Maddison is certainly one of the players we will be looking to this season and beyond to win us football matches.
