Alasdair Gold has revealed that it is Tottenham’s data-driven approach to recruitment that has led the club to Gent’s Gift Orban.
Orban has produced some unbelievable numbers in front of goal since his move to the Belgian top flight back in January, and it has been widely reported over the last few days that he is one of the names on top of Tottenham’s list to replace Harry Kane (The Athletic).
In fact, multiple publications (CaughtOffside and The Evening Standard) have claimed over the past 48 hours that Spurs are expected to press ahead with a concrete move for the Nigerian over the coming days, with the striker said to be valued at around £25m.
It was reported earlier this summer by The Telegraph that Daniel Levy is set to invest significantly in the data and analytics department at Tottenham in an effort to revamp the club’s recruitment.
The outlet added that the club had spoken to various betting experts about developing a data model to help revolutionise their transfer decisions.
Data-driven approach brings Spurs to Gift Orban
Gold has now indicated that it is precisely that number crunching that has brought Orban to the attention of the North London club.
The journalist said on Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “Maybe you look at younger players, give Richarlison the chance, and then supplement him with Gift Orban who is a very talented player.
“Spurs have looked at him for a while, data-led, he makes a lot of sense as well.”

It is Orban’s chance conversation ratio that might have made him stand out to Tottenham over other strikers across Europe.
While that should be transferable to a higher level, the pressure associated with playing for Spurs in the Premier League is considerably higher, which is why it would be a bit of a gamble to sign the 21-year-old.
