According to Jamie Carragher, James Maddison is going to thrive this season and, now that Harry Kane has left the club, it will be down to the midfielder to carry Tottenham Hotspur through the campaign.
Having been unable to save Leicester City from relegation last season, James Maddison was keen to remain in the Premier League and he got his wish thanks to Spurs.
Joining Tottenham in a deal worth a reported £40m (Sky Sports), Maddison has quickly established himself as a key figure in the Lilywhites’ squad. The playmaker’s influence has become particularly prevalent since the departure of Harry Kane.
New Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou, began the Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Brentford on Sunday afternoon, and it was Maddison who played a key role with two assists on the day.
With Kane gone, it will be down to Maddison to fill that creative gap, and the England international has even been given Kane’s number 10 shirt.
Can Maddison guide Spurs into the top four?
The comparisons between Kane and Maddison are inevitable, but Jamie Carragher believes the latter will relish the added pressure this season and could help Spurs achieve a top four finish.
He told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (14/08/23): “I think on the back of Kane going he’s taken his shirt, I think he had the armband on in the second half yesterday. It almost feels like he’s one of the main players at Spurs now, and he’s only had one game. He loves that responsibility.
“I love seeing him interviewed, he’s got that cheekiness about him. I think if we see anything from Spurs, Maddison is the sort of man to drag them to the Europa League places, or maybe top four.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is very likely that, if Spurs achieve a top six finish this year, James Maddison will be at the heart of that success. However, this is a transitional year for the club and we have to be realistic; anything in the top ten would be acceptable this season, as long as we see positive steps in the right direction.
