After a solid performance against Manchester United at the weekend, Michael Owen has admitted he may have been wrong about Tottenham Hotspur’s new number-one goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

Given Hugo Llorisdownturn in form last season, finding a new starting goalkeeper was high up on the to-do list for Tottenham this summer, and it didn’t take long for Spurs to replace him.

Guglielmo Vicario was the first new face to arrive through the door during the Ange Postecoglou era, with the Italian keeper signing from Empoli in a deal worth a reported £16.4m back in June (Guardian).

The 26-year-old has been thrown straight into the starting lineup by Postecoglou, both in pre-season and for the first two games of the new Premier League campaign.

Only time will tell whether Vicario has what it takes to be a success in England. His competitive debut, against Brentford, was not the kind of display to instil confidence, but the shot-stopper was in fine form against Manchester United this weekend.

Michael Owen impressed by Guglielmo Vicario

Michael Owen was one of many to doubt Vicario after that debut, but the former England striker has confessed he may have got it wrong, and revealed how impressed he was by the Spurs keeper’s latest performance.

Owen told Premier League Productions (19/08/23 at 7:40 pm): “I was particularly impressed with the goalkeeper. In this game, in particular. I thought he looked half-shaky in his debut [against Brentford], but [against Manchester United], he looked really good.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is way too early to be passing judgement on Guglielmo Vicario. He was fantastic against United this weekend and hopefully we see more of that in the games to come.

Coming to the Premier League is hard for any player, but goalkeepers have it especially tough as there is so much pressure on them, so we should be patient with Vicario as he adjusts.
