Theo Walcott has warned against getting carried away by Tottenham’s start to the season, remarking that the Lilywhites might be found out when they come up against a proper side.

While there was cause for optimism at Tottenham coming into the campaign, given the way Ange Postecoglou had got the side playing during pre-season, even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would not have expected things to click on the pitch so soon.

The North Londoners have been playing some eye-catching football so far this season, cutting through defences at will, and do not appear to have any issues in hitting the back of the net despite losing their record goalscorer in the summer.

Some of the passing and combination play that Spurs produced in the second half at Turf Moor was not too dissimilar to what we have come to expect from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, which is why some Tottenham fans are starting to get excited about what the team can achieve this season.

Arsenal legend is keen to pour cold water on Spurs

However, Walcott shrugged off suggestions that Spurs are the real deal, remarking that it is too early to get excited about Postecoglou’s side.

The former Arsenal man told Sky Sports: “It’s early days, it’s early days… It’s early days for Tottenham.

“I always feel that they get quite excited quite quickly with new managers and new ideas and, it’s fine, yes, they are playing nice right now but when they come up against a proper team..”, he added, before the host David Jones cut him off by saying: “That’s quite dismissive”.

Roy Keane then joked that he usually waits until the winter before writing off Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am absolutely overjoyed at the football that Postecolgou has got Tottenham playing and while Walcott obviously has his Arsenal blinkers on, I do feel that his point about not getting carried away has some merit.

There will undoubtedly be some teething troubles over the coming weeks and months, and we will be exposed on a couple of occasions. That is undoubtedly part of the team’s development process under Ange and Spurs fans should not overreact if and when those pitfalls occur.
