Pundit Alan Stubbs has said that James Maddison has been the standout so far among all the summer signings across the Premier League, remarking that the attacking midfielder is a perfect fit for Tottenham.

Maddison arrived at Spurs with an impressive CV, having posted some eye-catching numbers for what was, at times, a struggling Leicester City side over the past couple of years.

However, the England international has seemingly taken his game to a new level at Tottenham, now that he is surrounded by better players and operating in a system that appears to suit him well.

The 26-year-old found the back of the net with a trademark curled effort into the far corner at Turf Moor on Saturday and was once again at the centre of most of Spurs’ good moves as Ange Postecoglou’s men came away with a 5-2 win.

Stubbs believes that a player like Maddison is exactly what Tottenham had been crying out for.

When asked if the attacking midfielder is the signing of the summer, the former Everton centre-back told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: “I think he is. I think he’s a really good player. I think if you look at certain players where they are with certain clubs, for me he’s a perfect match for Tottenham.

“With the style of play they play, what they’ve been missing. They’ve been missing that link. Son [Heung-min] has dropped into there, now he’s playing out wide. He’s so intelligent, it would have been interesting to see him with Harry Kane if Harry Kane was still there in terms of his assists.

“But you look at Harry Kane, he liked to drop deep a lot of time, he had a bit of a free role to go and play wherever he wanted because he was that good.

“I think James Maddison is a top, top player. For me, he’s the one that’s caught my attention in terms of, he’s the best signing that I think there’s been this summer.”

Many clubs would be kicking themselves for letting Maddison go to Spurs relatively unchallenged.

Stubbs is right in saying that the 26-year-old was a perfect fit for the advanced eight role in Postecoglou’s system, which was evidently why the Australian made him one of his priority targets in the summer.
