Tim Sherwood says we cannot afford to get too carried away with how Tottenham have started the season and remarked that the side’s real ‘acid test’ will come when they take on Arsenal and Liverpool after the international break.

Tottenham certainly have not had an easy start on paper, having played three of their first four matches away from home while facing Man Utd in their first home game of the season.

There have been plenty of promising signs so far, with the North Londoners playing eye-catching football and securing ten points out of a possible 12 while finding the back of the net 11 times.

However, Sherwood suggested Ange Postcoglou’s men are susceptible at the back and pointed out that Spurs also made an impressive start under Antonio Conte last season before falling away.

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Optus Sport: “They are wide open defensively but they can’t get any worse defensively when they get all the numbers behind the ball over the last three or four years.

“I mean you can’t concede as many goals as you have been, so why don’t they play open football?

“They’re getting the results at the moment but steady as you go, let’s not get too carried away. Let’s not forget last season Tottenham won the first seven of 10 Premier League games and it was poor to watch, like watching paint dry.

“But the fans didn’t mind because they were winning football matches. This is a bit different. I’m more encouraged by his style of play.”

Liverpool and Arsenal will be the first Spurs test

Sherwood added that the real test for Spurs will come when they travel to the Emirates and host Liverpool later this month but the 54-year-old did admit that the Lilywhites look a much happier camp under Postecoglou.

He said about the upcoming clashes against the Gunners and the Reds: “It will be the acid test but they’ll go into it with a lot of confidence.

“They’ve got a manager now at Tottenham who is not doing Tottenham a favour by being there, someone who really appreciates the opportunity to manage a huge club. He’s an unassuming guy, I really like his character. The players obviously really like him, they’ve took to him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs fans will be a little more accepting of defeats under Ange than they were under Conte, because of the style of football that the team now plays.

Our approach under Conte was so negative at times that fans were always going to turn on the Italian if the results were not favourable.

Conte also evidently lost the dressing room once it became apparent that his methods were not producing results as the players evidently felt suffocated by the repetitive training drills.

In contrast, they seem to be enjoying football under Ange, who has given them the freedom to express themselves.
