Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has admitted that he expected Giovani Lo Celso to push for a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Even though Lo Celso was one of Spurs’ best performers during pre-season, the attacking midfielder was continuously linked with a move away from the club right through the summer transfer window.

The likes of Barcelona (Javi Miguel), Real Betis (Rudy Galetti) and Napoli (Il Mattino) are thought to have explored late loan moves for the Argentine.

However, he stayed put at the North London club, with various outlets claiming that Ange Postecoglou reassured the player’s camp that he will have a role at Tottenham this season (Express).

Lo Celso has only started one game for Spurs so far this campaign – the Carabao Cup second-round tie at Craven Cottage.

While Bridge believes that the 27-year-old might be a useful option to bring off the bench, he doubts if he will get much game time through the season.

Bridge is surprised Lo Celso didn’t leave Tottenham

When asked about Lo Celso, the journalist told the Last Word On Spurs podcast: “I’m surprised he stayed, if I’m honest. I know Unai Emery was looking at him potentially at Villa, but their options changed.

“Honestly, with Lo Celso I don’t know. Again, he’s an Argentina regular but I don’t know if it’ll ever happen for him at Tottenham. I hope he does because if he does do well, it means Spurs are successful.

“He’s certainly a good option off the bench, that’s for sure. But I just don’t see him long-term. If I’m wrong, great because that means he’s done well.”

It appears as if Lo Celso himself wanted to stay and fight for his place in the side. However, with Tottenham not being in Europe and now out of the Carabao Cup, I do not see how the Argentine is going to get any starts unless there is an injury to James Maddison.
