Daniel Levy has been speaking about Tottenham’s decision to initially sign up for the European Super League before withdrawing from the competition, along with the other Premier League sides.

Tottenham and the other members of the ‘big six’ signed up for the controversial European Super League in the summer of 2021. All six were eventually forced to withdraw from the proposed competition following a spate of fan protests (ESPN).

The European Super League debacle led to MP Tracey Crouch’s fan-led review of the structure of English football, with one of the proposals being the introduction of an independent regulator to protect clubs from financial mismanagement (BBC Sport).

Over the past year, some such as the ESL’s chief executive, Bernd Reichart, have continued insisting that the idea is far from dead and that there will be an updated proposal for the competition, which includes promotion and relegation (Financial Times via Football.London).

Levy has refused to get into the specifics of Tottenham’s decision to join and withdraw from the breakaway league, insisting that the hierarchy in N17 were simply acting in the best interest of the club.

Daniel Levy has no regrets about the Super League

The Spurs chairman told the Fan Forum held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (19/09/23 as quoted by Football London): “Firstly under the new rules with the Premier League we can’t consider leaving the Premier League without their consent and the FA’s consent.

“All I would say to you is that we always act in the best interests of this club and I stand by the decision that we made, that we were prepared to have a conversation regarding the European Super League.

“It was not leaving the Premier League, it was about forming a new European league that would have continued at the same time as the Premier League, but we felt that it was a disaster for a lot of reasons but I stand by my decision that I was acting in the best interests of the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is unsurprising that Daniel Levy has not gone into specific details regarding the issue, given how controversial it has proven to be.
