Alasdair Gold has said that Ange Postecoglou will continue to drive Tottenham’s recruitment decisions even after the new sporting director arrives through the door.
Antonio Conte infamously labelled Djed Spence as a ‘club signing’ last summer (The Athletic), which led some fans to question how much input the manager at Tottenham has on recruitment decisions.
However, Postecoglou has been quite clear so far that every single signing is sanctioned by him and he will not approve the arrival of a player who does not fit into his system (Daily Mail).
So far, the Australian has had plenty of success in the transfer market, with the likes of Micky Van de Ven, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario fitting seamlessly into the side.
Postecoglou will retain power in Tottenham transfers
Gold insisted that even though Tottenham’s recruitment department is expected to go through some big changes with the arrival of the new sporting director, it will be Postecoglou who ultimately calls the shots in terms of signings.
When asked about Spurs’ smart recruitment this summer, the journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “I think it’s just a case of Spurs buying the perfect players to fit a system rather than trying to make good players fit something they don’t.
“Postecoglou has a very strong understanding of what he wants and what works within his team. I can only see that continuing with Scott Munn because he will appoint a new technical director and Postecoglou will drive their recruitment still with those above him making it happen.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I believe that the success of most new signings depends primarily on the manager being able to get the best out of them as most players at this level as supremely talented.
For example, Tottenham’s decisions to sign the likes of Bissouma and Porro were certainly not bad recruitment decisions. It was simply a case of Antonio Conte not being able to able to get the best out of them.
