Ian Wright has refused to rule out Tottenham Hotspur from the title race, remarking that the Lilywhites have to take it one game at a time and continue to ride their current wave.

Seven games in, Spurs are sitting in second place in the Premier League table, just a point behind league leaders, Manchester City.

It is safe to say that even the most optimistic of Tottenham fans would not have expected the team to have such a good start to the season, given that they are at the start of a brand new project under Ange Postecoglou.

What is particularly encouraging is that, unlike last season, when Spurs also started well, their performances have been excellent up to this point, raising hopes among the fan base that their current run of form is sustainable.

When asked if Tottenham could compete for the title, Gary Neville rejected the possibility on Saturday, pointing to the lack of squad depth that Postecoglou’s men have as the reason why they are unlikely to keep up with Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool (Gary Neville podcast on Sky Sports).

Are Tottenham Premier League title contenders?

However, Wright has insisted that as long as Spurs win the games that they are expected to, they can stay within touching distance of City.

When asked about Tottenham potentially competing for the title, the Arsenal legend told Premier League Productions (as relayed by The Metro): “Carry on doing what they’re doing, nobody was expecting Tottenham at the start of the season, especially with a new manager, to be doing what they’re doing.

“At the moment they’ve got confidence and momentum and you’ve just got to concentrate on the next game. You look back at when Leicester won it, that’s all Leicester did.

“They just won some games and got to a certain point and people said we’ll see what they do when they play this team and that team and bam they beat them.

“People said Tottenham started well we’ll see when they play Arsenal and Liverpool. Bam, look where they are. It’s all about momentum and confidence and while you’ve got that and you continue to beat the teams you’re supposedly meant to beat, if you keep going and don’t get injuries to Son and Maddison, the more success they have, then the pressure comes.

“At the moment I think the teams in the top five are all title challengers and as long as you can stay close to Manchester City for as long as you of course you are challengers.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Realistically speaking, it is going to be next to impossible for any team to keep up with Man City while Arsenal and Liverpool are also clearly much ahead of us in their development.

I do not think Spurs fans can genuinely entertain talks of a title tilt until next season when Ange has had time to build the squad.
