Dwight Yorke expects a three-horse race for the Premier League title between Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, but admitted that a ‘surprise’ from Tottenham cannot be ruled out for the time being.
Ahead of the start of the season, Spurs were not even considered by many to be contenders for a top-four spot, let alone potential title challengers.
However, the Lilywhites have delivered some outstanding performances so far this season and look a formidable unit when they have their best eleven out on the pitch.
Unlike some of his predecessors, Ange Postecoglou has not played down the team’s expectations or ambitions publicly. In fact, he has done the opposite, insisting that Spurs fans have every right to dream about something special this season (Football.London).
However, Yorke believes that we will have to wait until the midway point in the season before making a real assessment of Spurs, arguing that they are a rung below City, Arsenal and Liverpool at the moment.
Are Spurs dark horses to watch in the title race?
The former Man Utd striker told Stocklytics (via Liverpool Echo): “I think the title race is between Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool. It’s very silly to write off Liverpool, especially when you see their attacking threat and the players they have.
“I still think they’re a threat and, if you’re a football person, you’d be silly not to think Liverpool are in that conversation. We saw Arsenal get the points against City, and we also saw City lose against Wolves, which was unheard of.
“There are some cracks evident with Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan not being there and City aren’t as strong as they’d like to be. They’re still very good, though. There’s a bit of hope for Arsenal and Liverpool will be looking for their opportunity.
“Those are the three for me, and the rest of them will be runners-up to them. I think Spurs look great and we’ve seen the likes of Aston Villa top of the league at the start of the season, but ask me about Tottenham in January.
“We’ve seen the odd exception in the Premier League with the likes of Blackburn and Leicester, so I won’t write Spurs off, and I’ll give them more credit.
“You never know in football, and that’s what makes it fascinating. We’ll know what the league is really like after December, and it’s then we’ll realise who’s really amongst it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is clear that most Spurs fans acknowledge that talk of a title tilt is quite premature at the moment, with the media being the ones who are playing up the prospect at the moment.
They would be the ones to turn around and suggest that we ‘bottled it’ if we fall away, even though Tottenham were completely written off at the start of the season.
